According to The NPD Group Reports on Handy Gifts, 128 million hand tools were sold in the 12 months ending October 2010, and five percent were given as gifts. Hand tool gift purchases increased 17 percent in the 12 months ending October 2010, compared to the same time last year. Screwdrivers and wrenches are the top-selling hand tools as gifts, accounting for 46 and 20 percent of unit sales respectively. Wrenches, hammers, and hand saws demonstrated the largest growth in terms of gift sales for the 12 months ending October 2010. “Hand tools are the practical and affordable gifts that keep on giving,” says Mark Delaney, director of The NPD Group’s home division. “During challenging economic times, consumers are doing more projects on their own and looking to keep spending down, but they still want to give during the holidays. Almost 90 percent of hand tool gift purchases were made in store, a great last-minute stocking stuffer to grab.”
